The development of religions and churches
For many centuries the role of religion and church has been crucial for all European countries. L’viv is the center of a unique region, where different religious communities lived next to each other for many years, which defined the development of the city. All ethnic groups that inhabited L’viv had their own religions and worshiped their own gods. From the time of the foundation of L’viv and till the 18th century, different temples, monasteries, and schools were built and established here.
The exhibit is inspired by the variety of religious beliefs, that co-existed in these lands, each leaving its unique mark on the L’viv lifestyle. Clerics of different confessions were actively involved in the city affairs and influenced their congregations.
Many citizens of L’viv — members of the clergy, were prominent figures of their time. Among them rabbis, bishops of the Greek and Roman Catholic Churches, as well as Christian Orthodox priests. Some of them are represented in our exhibits, but you may also learn more from the monitors.
One of the stories tells about the Church of Transfiguration and the burials found in its crypts.
